M: Recently watched an anime, and I can't remember which one. I ended up binging, like, three seasons of a couple different anime. I can't remember what the hell the series was, but in one of the later episodes, because of course it's an anime, so there's a male and a female of high school age. But the significant thing is that the father of the girl isn't seen for a lot of the series up until the point where he is finally introduced. It turns out he used to be a street rapper, but gave up that life, like a really good one. In the episode, he ends up having a rap battle with the father of the boy. As I'm talking through it, I think it was one where the guy is some kind of hall monitor, but also kind of stupid, and she is supposed to be some sort of popular person. It's usually told from her perspective. Anyway, I just need the title of it.

G: I think you're describing Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (Aharen-san Is Indecipherable).

The male lead is Raidō, the extremely earnest guy whose brain constantly takes mundane situations in ridiculous directions, and the girl is Reina Aharen. They're high-school students, and the show has a recurring, inexplicably serious commitment to rap—including an entire early episode built around Aharen and Raidō communicating through rap. citeturn2search3turn2search28

Your description of the guy as “some kind of hall monitor, but also kind of stupid” is what particularly made it click for me. 😄

However: I haven't yet found confirmation in the indexed episode material for the two fathers having the later rap battle, so I don't want to pretend I've nailed it solely because Aharen-san contains rap. If that specific father-vs-father scene is something you distinctly remember, give me about one more identifying detail—what either parent looked like, whether the girl was tiny/quiet, etc.—and I can pin it down.

M: No, the primary story is that the guy is part of a, like, absurdly committed set of, like, hall monitors and school monitors and stuff like that. The girl— oh shit, I've almost got it. The girl, it starts with the girl refusing to add more length to her skirt. I think that the skirt is actually part of the title.

G: YES. Found it. 😄

It's The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt (Ponkotsu Fūkiin to Skirt-take ga Futekisetsu na JK no Hanashi). citeturn0search4turn0search34

You had basically every identifying detail right:

So your memory wasn't conflating two anime. You were remembering The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt.

And your “because of course it's an anime” description was actually doing surprisingly good diagnostic work. 😂
