M: This kind of seems a little bit ouroboros, but I need you to go online and figure out for me what the hell is going on with your export system. We've had similar conversations before, and I have not been able to get any kind of export or backup. I need to know what the hell is going on, what I need to do, etc., etc. We had a system set up where the export would then be cut up and things like that. I haven't been able to work on that. I haven't been able to reference anything that I've had back in the day. I really, really need to find this. And it's like there isn't even a oops email or something. You know, the only mail I've gotten from ChatGPT or any other source has been to verify that this is my email when I tell it to export. Please go in and think about it a little. Don't give just the surface off-the-cuff thing. Make sure that the answer that you give is an aggregation of similar responses and that it's the most recent result, because if you give me answers from a couple weeks ago, that isn't necessarily going to be the right answer. And like I said, I put in a backup request Friday. I haven't touched anything since. And I did a check to make sure there is no time in the last couple months where I tried to export and then just wasn't paying attention. There has been no email other than those verification ones.

G: I’ll treat this as two parts: what OpenAI currently says the export flow should do, and what recent user reports suggest when it silently fails or only sends verification emails. I’ll also check whether there’s a practical recovery path rather than just repeating “try again.”

G: Here’s the practical read:
OpenAI’s current official rule is: exports can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after arrival. Your Friday request is probably June 26, 2026, so as of today, June 29, it is still inside the official window. citeturn939024view0
But your “only verification emails, no export-ready email” detail matters. Recent reports describe a failure mode where Export → Confirm export sends the user through email verification, then returns to Data Controls without actually creating the export request. That matches your symptom suspiciously well. citeturn164265view0 OpenAI’s Edu export docs even explicitly say that after email verification, you may need to return to ChatGPT and start the export again. citeturn164265view2
What I’d do:
Also check that you are in a personal Free/Plus/Pro account, not Business/Enterprise; OpenAI says settings-based export is not available for Business or Enterprise workspaces. citeturn939024view0
I did not find a current official OpenAI status incident specifically saying “ChatGPT exports are broken,” though there were recent account/login and file upload/download incidents in June. citeturn164265view1
M: okay, for the record, it gave me a new green "you'll get an email" popup the second time. we'll see where things go from there tomorrow.

G: Good — that green “you’ll get an email” popup is the first sign that the export request may have actually been accepted, rather than just looping through email verification.
For the record: Monday, June 29, 2026. The export request appears to have been successfully re-triggered today after the second attempt.
I’d treat the clock as starting from that green-popup attempt, not necessarily from Friday. If nothing shows up by Monday, July 6, then it has exceeded OpenAI’s stated 7-day window.
