I've raked up all of the stuff that can be easily raked up. This is a photo of the basic area. I'd say it's maybe 20 feet across at the widest point. I say the basic area because there's kind of an offshoot, but because of what counts as our land in terms of being able to do what we want with it, etc. etc., versus HOA communal ownership, it's kind of an odd shape. I'm not sure which one is more porous or more desirable or whatever. My point is that just with the term clay, I'm already falling short in terms of appropriate terminology, so I need some help in knowing what I look for before I start digging and trying to describe it.

A picture of the dirt pile is like taking a picture of a cake after it's been blended in a food processor. A picture of the side wall lets us see the layers. Based on the grove photos you've posted, a single good profile shot of a shovel-sized inspection pit will probably tell us more than another hour of verbal descriptions.

I started doing something that was about 12 by 12. I got down 12 inches, but it's not constant because I hit a sizable enough root that I didn't want to mess with the larger trees. Life is hard enough without some schmuck pulling up your lifelines. But I did get down 12 inches, and this is what the side of the hole looks like. I tried to pull back a little bit so you could get some context with the little saplings and leaves that were nearby.

G: This photo is actually extremely informative.

And it immediately answers one of the big questions.

You are already at mineral soil.

The dark layer at the top is only about an inch or two thick in this spot. That's not deep woodland duff at all.

If it forms a ball but crumbles apart, you've got a healthier clay-loam mix than I expected.

From the photo alone, my guess is:

clay loam rather than pure clay, which would be a pleasant surprise for a woodland grove in your part of Virginia.

M: Well, this hole can be thought of as the, what would we call it, the one near a major tree. That's one of the reasons why I stopped with the roots. It's because this hole is in one of the corners, or it's circular, so corner is the wrong word, near one of the pegs that I put down to define space. And about two to three feet from a major tree. I figured if I got any closer, I definitely would start hitting roots. That leaves one near the center, which will be interesting because I did have to cut down one tree, so there'll still be roots. And I guess this counts as near the edge as well. I can definitely do one on the other side near the edge, but I'd rather keep the deep holes to a minimum to avoid risking hitting any of the major tree roots. All right, so later on, I'll do one in the middle and one on the opposite edge. Maybe this time do the same distance around, but go six inches deep unless things look really different in one of them.

G: I think your plan is exactly right, with one modification:

Don't think of the next two holes as "deep holes." Think of them as "profile checks."

The first hole already answered the biggest question:

"Am I standing on six inches of duff or actual soil?"

Answer: actual soil is very close to the surface.

In fact, just give me a brief rundown of where you think things should go if all of the holes indicate a similarity to the one that I've already dug. I mean, I'll admit I haven't been 100% thorough in terms of raking up the leaves and the decomposing stuff, but, you know, I was thinking in terms of the duff that you had described. Now having walked on it, what came up just now isn't really a surprise to me, but with such a thin surface, before you start hitting more of a clay combination, how much is there that I need to take off? And it sounds like you simultaneously want me to take off the top layer and leave just the clay, and then improve the stuff which is no longer there because I just took it off.

G: No, and I'm glad you pushed back on that, because those are actually two different layers that I've been talking about, and I think they've become conflated.

From your hole photo, I would not currently recommend stripping the grove down to bare clay.

In fact, that would probably make the final result worse.


What I mean by "true grove surface"

When I say that, I'm not talking about:

M: To give you a better tactile description of what's going on, when I was digging, it actually was a, it was more of a carving situation on the top. I'd get the shovel in four or five inches and try to lift like you normally would, and the clay substrate, I think I'm using that word correctly, would come up, but everything above it was held together by the tiny roots you were talking about. Like, if I was careful right now, or any time until the next major rain, I probably could reload the dirt that I took out and replace most of the cap that I had to take up, because that's pretty much what it was. It's like half dirt and half roots within those two inches or three inches of dirt.

G: That's actually a very important observation, because it changes how I'd describe what you're standing on.

What you're describing is not:

"2 inches of loose duff sitting on clay."

It's closer to:

"2–3 inches of living woodland topsoil reinforced by a root mat."

Those are different things.

The clue is this part:

"everything above it was held together by the tiny roots"

That's exactly what a healthy woodland surface often does.


What I think happened is that the leaves have been decomposing for years, and the trees have responded by concentrating feeder roots in that nutrient-rich zone.

Sounds like what you're saying is that the root mat is much better of a choice than anything I could import in terms of handling runoff and stability and anything else that's involved in landscaping. And that instead of the replacement of duff with something that is more conducive towards grass, that instead what I should be thinking of is using this as a stable mat upon which to put a kind of thin conditioning layer for the grass. Because that's really the aesthetic priority here, is just to make an area where the grass is dominant, at least sufficiently that, you know, in the case of a zombie apocalypse or something five years from now, it would at least be identifiable rather than being something that needs to be thoroughly refreshed every year against all of the underbrush that's trying to take over the open areas right now.

G: You're mostly thinking correctly, but there's one place where I'd adjust the framing.

The mature trees are already doing a lot of the stabilization work for you.

M: Yeah, as I'm reading, that's what I meant by uh appropriate chemical bits. You know, a fertilizer is not, as I understand it, universal in terms of helping everything. Like some encourages one particular aspect and inhibits another, or at least doesn't give as much of a boost, etc., etc. Um The fescue sounds like the right approach. I'm thinking of a light soil level no matter what, not even necessarily a complete level, but just a distribution because the root problem you're talking about does not seem to be existent beyond a reasonable radius of any particular tree. Not on the surface anyway. I haven't quite done it barefoot, but I have done a lot of rounds, and generally, I've had more issues with unexpected holes where I guess something was but decomposed. And only recently has been exposed than actually hitting anything that was an unexpected bump. I mean, I'll check again as I work, but I feel like you're overemphasizing that compared to what I've actually experienced so far. It's like the ones that have succeeded best have been the trees whose genetics or situation led to them burrowing down, meaning that most of them haven't been in a situation where that exposed upper root really comes into play. I'm not exactly sure how that works in terms of survival of the fittest and all that. I'm not sure how the exposed root might leave vulnerabilities, but it appears that either through chance or nature, that most of these trees are following a predilection to just try and burrow down rather than expand on the surface.

G: I think you're right to push back a little on the root issue.

The reason I kept mentioning roots earlier is that I was mentally picturing a much older, denser forest floor than what you've actually shown me.

Now that I've seen:

M: So it sounds like in terms of any kind of fertilizer application, the better choice would be first to caretake the grass in terms of letting it establish itself sufficiently and only then introduce some kind of fertilizer, which would give it a push towards dominance instead of coexistence because of its nearness to the application layer, rather than putting them both down and letting the other stuff in the underbrush have an equal crack at it before the actual grass gets a chance to establish itself.

The reason is exactly what you identified.

Right now the grove contains:

If you dump a lot of growth-promoting nutrients into that system before the fescue has established itself, you're essentially hosting a free buffet for everybody.

Once the fescue has germinated and started forming a dense cover, it becomes much better at intercepting:

At that point, feeding the grove tends to benefit the grass disproportionately because the grass occupies most of the surface.


One thing that may surprise you:

If the grove ends up as shady as I suspect, you may ultimately use less fertilizer than a typical lawn, not more.

A lot of woodland-adjacent fescue failures come from people trying to force lush suburban-lawn growth in conditions that naturally support a thinner, slower-growing stand.

Your stated goal isn't:

"Golf course."

It's:

"Recognizable grove that resists succession."

That's a much easier target to hit.

If the next two soil checks resemble the first one, I'd currently rank the grove's future priorities roughly as:

  1. Sunlight
  2. Sapling suppression
  3. Grass establishment
  4. Soil improvement
  5. Fertilization

which is almost the reverse of what many people assume when they start a project like this.
