M: Let's say I wanted to automate, or at least minimally, with interaction, export my chats on a daily basis and cut them up for use in a PHP template. I'm trying to get through my backlog of chats and post most of them for posterity's sake. But if I wanted to do this on a daily basis without cutting and pasting the chats, which I'd rather not do simply because I appreciate the timestamping that's included on the exported version, what method would you suggest using? Like I said, we're going to try and automate it as much as possible, at least in creation of the exported chats. What happens once they've been brought to a home directory and placed in a directory is beside the point. You've already provided me with a, I can't remember if it's a script or a command line sequence, but either way, you've already got me in a situation where I can take what's contained in the zip you export and splice it into Markdown. And then I've got the pandoc command that'll help me turn that into an HTML. It's the step between saying I'm done with chats for the day and putting it into the storage that really is the part that I'm not sure how I would automate. Especially since you have a tendency to export everything to the point of redundancy, at least in the methods I've used. Although, honestly, I was just following a instruction sheet, so I might have easily missed something that allows for iterative exports. Also, in your code, sorry, also in your response, don't include any code. Just give me the concept first before we start talking about anything involving code.

G: Short version: there’s no public, supported way to programmatically export consumer-ChatGPT chats on a schedule. You can still get very close to “one-button end-of-day” with a sane pipeline, or go fully automatic if you’re willing to (a) switch future conversations to the OpenAI API/Assistants, or (b) use ChatGPT Enterprise’s Compliance API.
Here’s the menu of workable approaches, from most “today-practical” to most “fully automatic.”
Tradeoffs: you still initiate the export; the email link expires in 24h; exports are all-or-nothing (hence the dedupe stage). This stays within normal usage (no scraping of the ChatGPT UI).
Caveat: requires Enterprise/Edu (Team doesn’t include Compliance API). See OpenAI’s help on Enterprise analytics/compliance for the distinction. citeturn0search8
Adopt Plan A as the backbone. It’s reliable and fast to set up:
/archive/chatgpt/YYYY-MM-DD/.Add Plan C for new work you explicitly want fully automatic: do research/longform in an Assistants-backed client or script so those chats land straight in your store without any export step.
Later, consider Plan B if/when Enterprise is justified; you’d swap out the email export+d edupe for the Compliance API pull and keep the rest of the pipeline.
OpenAI’s consumer Export Data is intentionally a
manual, email-mediated process with a 24-hour expiring link. There’s no
official scheduling API for consumer accounts, and the help docs
describe export as a settings action followed by an emailed link, not a
programmable endpoint.

Trying to drive the UI with headless browsers is brittle, may break with
CAPTCHAs/2FA, and can violate terms; the email-pull + dedupe approach
avoids that.
