They don't have to learn. Maybe they'll pick it up by repetition, but if they have to do their homework without showing their work, and they just plug stuff into a calculator, they aren't necessarily going to pick up on that pattern repetition. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. I look for patterns in everything to the point of self-destructiveness. Not quite conspiratorially, but it makes it very difficult for me to make definite decisions because I'm always looking for the thing that I'm missing. Anyway, the point is, you give a calculator to a young kid, you are preventing them from progressing. You give it to someone who's you know, college level though, and it's not just useful, it's mandatory for making any progress. They understand the basic concepts that the calculator can perform, but if they had to do so by hand, they wouldn't be able to make the next logical leaps necessary to progress as a mathematician. You know, like how there are fields now that not only didn't exist, but couldn't have existed 70 years ago because there wasn't the right equipment. And once you start looking at it that way, even before you get to GPT, you could say the same thing about computers, although not quite as directly in a one-to-one way. I mean, having the calculator function and a lot of creative people means that people can cheat. But when you start getting into computers, it doesn't necessarily interfere with your thinking as a whole, because in order to cheat, you need to learn how to cheat. Because you're designed to socialize, but in the same way that masturbation is to sex. Talking with GPT is just all about self-gratification, and that's what it's designed to do. And that's fine, but if you're not prepared to move on to sex, the masturbation really becomes a roadblock, not an enabling thing, to the point that it actually prevents any development further. Am I making any sense with that? Because I kind of went off on a tangent. But the point is that even if we just keep it strictly to the intellectual things, GPT has managed to create a situation in which a third grader can, by rote, get a two-page report on panda extinction without ever having to even read what was written for them, or to figure out how to use the tools that people got upset about when computers came along. You know, they were worried that research would become a thing of the past because you could look things up. And then the honest people who were complaining admitted to themselves that even though it made things faster, it didn't make researching any easier, because you had to know how to look for what you were looking for, and how to identify it as what you were looking for. But now we've got this system where thought is no longer necessary. So what do you think of the metaphor? Anything I need to do to tighten it up besides make it a lot less of a verbal pile to throw at someone?
