M: I'm looking for an option for a workroom that falls halfway between the modular sturdiness of a pegboard and the potential variability of a corkboard, if that makes sense. I'm trying to get... it doesn't have to be equivalent in terms of their strengths to either, but I need something that can hold a few pounds, but which... you know, it needs to be able to hold a few pounds like a pegboard, but the shape or definition of how things are being hung can't be the rigid grid of a pegboard. It needs to be more flexible like a corkboard. Am I making sense, and do any options like that exist?

G: TL;DR: Yes—several “grid-less but sturdy” systems exist. The most practical are French cleats, slatwall, steel-sheet+magnets, and rail/slot systems (Unistrut or 80/20). Pick based on how freeform you want placement vs. how many pounds you need to hold.

Strong, flexible options

  1. French cleat wall (plywood or aluminum)
  1. Retail-style slatwall (wood/MDF or PVC “garage” panels)
  1. Steel sheet + high-strength magnets
  1. Unistrut/strut-channel lattice with spring nuts
  1. Aluminum T-slot extrusion (80/20, Bosch Rexroth) frame/panel
  1. Plywood “anywhere screw” board with hidden strength

Quick picks

Install/usage notes

Any of the above will give you pegboard-level strength with far more flexible placement than a rigid hole grid.

M: Please go online and find me an example picture for each of the six suggestions you gave me that will allow me to identify visually what you're talking about. Because I think I recognize at least a couple of those, but I could not have named any of them. So I need something so that I can put a visual to the word as I think about it.

If you want magnet-only walls specifically (no slats/holes), these show the look: 12×12 magnetic steel panels and similar setups. citeturn1search0turn1search3
