G: TL;DR:
Fox News is often the most-watched cable news network, but when you combine ABC, CBS, and NBC, especially for their evening newscasts, they typically have far more viewers than Fox. It's a misleading comparison unless you're comparing the same types of shows (e.g., evening news to evening news, or total day cable viewership to total day broadcast viewership).

Breakdown:

📺 Broadcast Networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) – Evening News Ratings

As of 2024 data (still relevant unless a major shift has happened recently):

• ABC World News Tonight – ~7.5 to 8.5 million viewers
• NBC Nightly News – ~6 to 7 million viewers
• CBS Evening News – ~4 to 5 million viewers
Combined total: ~17–21 million for evening newscasts alone

📡 Fox News – Cable News Ratings

• Primetime (e.g., Hannity, Jesse Watters, etc.) – often averages 2–3 million viewers per show
• Total day (24-hour average): ~1.5 million viewers
• Most-watched cable show (e.g., The Five) – ~2.5–3 million at peak

Even at its peak, Fox News rarely exceeds 3 million viewers for a single show.

Key Context:

• Broadcast vs Cable: ABC, NBC, and CBS are free over-the-air broadcast networks and reach a broader audience, especially among older demographics who still tune in to nightly news. Fox News is only available via cable or streaming subscriptions.
• Fox is #1 among cable news networks, beating CNN and MSNBC — but not #1 overall when compared to combined broadcast news viewership.
• Fox News often leads in the 25–54 demographic (which advertisers care about), even if its total viewership is smaller.

Summary:

Fox News dominates cable news, but it does not outdraw ABC, CBS, and NBC combined. In fact, just ABC alone often gets more viewers during its nightly newscast than any single Fox News show.
