M: How would one go about testing one’s production and reaction to dopamine? I seem to react minimally to things which, compared to other people, should delight me. I have at least three possible physiological theories: that I respond normally, but have low dopamine production capacity; that production is normal, but my neurological response is low; or the most frustrating but positive version, that my response is normal, but I am so constantly delighted by everything around me that I’ve built up a tolerance. And that’s not even taking into account potential psychological factors. In order to discount any of these physical theories, I would need to find some way of testing my production and response. Is there anyway to do that?

Medical and Lab Testing

  1. Neurotransmitter Testing (Indirect)

    • Some labs offer urine, saliva, or blood tests for dopamine metabolites (like homovanillic acid). These aren’t definitive but can hint at production levels.
  2. PET or SPECT Scans

    • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scans can measure dopamine activity and receptor availability in the brain. These are expensive and usually done for research or diagnosing conditions like Parkinson’s.
  3. Genetic Testing

    • Certain genes, like those affecting the COMT enzyme (which breaks down dopamine) or the DRD4 receptor (linked to dopamine sensitivity), could provide clues.

Self-Experimentation & Response Testing

  1. Response to Dopaminergic Substances

    • Caffeine or Nicotine (both mildly boost dopamine)—Does a normal dose affect you as much as others report?
    • L-Tyrosine Supplements (a dopamine precursor)—If taken on an empty stomach, does it make a noticeable difference?
    • Bupropion or Ritalin (if prescribed)—These increase dopamine and norepinephrine. If you’ve ever taken them, how did you react?
  2. Behavioral Dopamine Testing

    • Novelty-Seeking Behavior: People with high dopamine sensitivity tend to seek out novelty and thrills. Do you feel a strong urge for new experiences, or does everything feel ‘meh’?
    • Reward Sensitivity: Try a small gambling game or reward-based system. Does winning feel exciting, or is it just an outcome?
    • Effort-Reward Balance: Dopamine drives effort. Do you feel the anticipation of reward makes work feel easier, or is effort purely a rational decision?
  3. Sensory and Emotional Response Tests

    • Music-Driven Pleasure: People with strong dopamine responses often get chills from music. Does this happen to you?
    • Food and Dopamine: Do you experience strong pleasure from high-reward foods (chocolate, umami-rich foods), or do they just register as “tastes good”?

If you suspect chronic dopamine saturation, you could try a dopamine fast (avoiding artificial stimulation like social media, junk food, and novelty for a few days) and then see if normal experiences feel more rewarding afterward.
